Much of the violence is under-reported leaving a distorted picture of the cycle of violence. From the start of the roadmap process, this blog will try to catalog any violence resulting in deaths on either side, as well as the number of wounded with one entry per event. It also includes violence against peace activists and charitable volunteers. Prior violence is cataloged for context only.

TULKARM, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli commandos killed a militant linked to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement outside a West Bank refugee camp on Tuesday, witnesses and the army said.

A military spokesman said troops tried to arrest Na'nish but opened fire when he and a second gunman shot at them. Israeli forces have captured and killed scores of militants spearheading a three-year-old Palestinian uprising.
Witnesses said the Israeli shooting was unprovoked and that a second man was wounded. The military spokesman said troops shot at a second gunman at the scene who got away. "

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan last night accused Israel of violating international law in destroying three Gaza apartment towers and urged it to end actions making a Middle East peace deal harder to reach.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli forces swooped into the West Bank city where Yasser Arafat is based on Tuesday, encircled a mosque and fired weapons and tear gas to disperse hundreds of stone-throwers, witnesses said.

Hundreds of youths came out to throw stones at the soldiers, who responded by firing live ammunition and tear gas, Reuters correspondents at the scene said. Worshippers were later allowed to leave the mosque after being questioned by soldiers.
Israeli military sources denied troops used live fire and described the raid as a swoop for militants waging a three-year-old uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

IAF missiles: Nusseirat: 8 Palestinians 70 wounded
Excite News: "Israeli Strikes in Gaza Kill 9, Wound 93 | Oct 20, 4:49 PM (ET) | By IBRAHIM BARZAK
...
Later Monday, the helicopters targeted a car in the Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza after nightfall, killing six people and wounding 70, witnesses and Palestinian officials said.
Residents said one of the dead was a doctor who was treating victims when a second missile struck. The identity of the other victims was not immediately known, and the military did not comment.
The missiles struck the main street of the refugee camp, destroying the car. Hundreds of camp residents carried charred pieces of the vehicle aloft and chanted, "Revenge, revenge."
[Later reports put the death toll at 8. ed.]
Conflicting Accounts of Gaza Airstrike Oct 21, 6:28 PM (ET) By JOSEF FEDERMAN (AP)
Palestinians said the seven dead were civilians killed by an Israeli missile fired into a crowd at the Nusseirat refugee camp. The army said the majority of those killed were militants, releasing part of a video indicating there was no one on the street near the vehicle when it was hit by two missiles. The Palestinians say a third missile caused the deaths. [How did the 70 people get wounded? See below. ed.]
...
The grainy video showed a crowd gathering around the car about two minutes after the second strike, and the video ended some 40 seconds later. The military said an additional 10 minutes were recorded but didn't release the additional footage.
...
But the images on the video were unclear so it was not possible to verify the witnesses' claims that the militants fled after the first strike.
...
An Associated Press reporter who reached the scene shortly after the attack Monday night saw several people with what appeared to be shrapnel wounds lying on stretchers and receiving treatment from paramedics.
More than a dozen ambulances were seen rushing from Gaza City to the area of Nusseirat.
...
Militants killed in Israeli strikes are usually claimed quickly by their organizations, but no armed groups came forward after the Nusseirat attack.
Brig. Gen. Ruth Yaron, the army spokeswoman, acknowledged there were civilian casualties, but added that "there is no doubt that the majority of those killed yesterday were terrorists." She held the militants ultimately responsible, saying they were using bystanders as human shields. [I thought there was nobody close on the video. ed.]

Israeli opposition leader Shimon Peres demanded an investigation into the Nusseirat deaths, saying: "The guilty one is the one who gives the orders to the air force."

Video Raises Questions on Israeli Strike
A video of an Israeli missile strike in a Gaza refugee camp shows people running in a nearby alley, and the army said Thursday it is investigating whether this could explain the high number of casualties reported by the Palestinians.
Monday's attack in the Nusseirat refugee camp, which left eight people dead and 70 wounded, revived debate in Israel over targeted killings, prompted in part by Palestinian claims that one missile was fired into a crowd.

Three soldiers were killed and another was seriously wounded. The gunmen fled the scene in a car, they said.
The al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an offshoot of Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for the attack. It said the operation was in retaliation for Israeli raids in southern Gaza in which 15 people have been killed in the past week.
