Hamas VII - An Israeli War Crime Goes Septic: "By Terrell E. Arnold | 8-25-6
The Israeli Zionist dream for Palestine is coming true. Deprived of food, water, electricity, money, medical care, safety, leadership, and official outside help, the Palestinians are turning on each other as they struggle to survive. But Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has made it clear that this is only the beginning. "Nobody dies from not having electricity," Olmert is said to have told his cabinet, and "no one in Gaza should sleep". Emphasizing that last point, low-flying IDF jets break the sound barrier over Gaza virtually every night.
The Palestinian government disaster was deliberately contrived by Israel, the United States, the European Union, and the United Nations. On top of this, the Israel Defense Force is conducting daily raids, bombings, attacks, kidnappings, and interference with human movements. The goal is to contrive the utter collapse of Palestinian society, while goading as many as possible into leaving, dying, or killing each other; it is doubtful that the Olmert government or its Zionist backers care which.

Excite News: "Israeli raid in Lebanon tests truce | Aug 19, 8:09 AM (ET)| By Nadim Ladki
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Helicopter-borne Israeli commandos raided a Hizbollah bastion on Saturday in what Lebanon called a "naked violation" of the U.N.-backed truce that halted Israel's 34-day war with the Shi'ite Muslim group.
Israel said the operation in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley aimed to disrupt weapons supplies to Hizbollah from Syria and Iran. Both countries deny arming the group.
Lebanese security sources said three Hizbollah guerrillas were killed in a dawn firefight with the Israeli commandos. The Israeli army said it had suffered one dead and two wounded.
"It is a naked violation of the cessation of hostilities declared by the Security Council," Prime Minister Fouad Siniora told reporters.
Siniora said he had protested to visiting U.N. envoys who would take the matter up with Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The truce came into effect on Monday.
Commandos in two vehicles unloaded from helicopters were intercepted on their way to an office of a Hizbollah leader, Sheikh Mohammed Yazbek, in the village of Bodai, the Lebanese sources said. The Israelis withdrew under cover of air strikes.
"Special forces carried out an operation to disrupt terror actions against Israel with an emphasis on the transfer of munitions from Syria and Iran to Hizbollah," Israel's army said. ...

Israel's invasion of Lebanon has been a disaster, but there's little chance that it will change tack.
Truth might be the first casualty of every war, but not even the densest fog can hide the fact that Israel's invasion of Lebanon has been a moral, military and political disaster.
Not only has Israel burnished its reputation as a regional bully, it has also managed to acquire a new one for being more savage and indiscriminate than the foes its allies in the western media have effectively demonised as brutish reprobates. The statistics speak for themselves.
To date Israel has acknowledged the deaths of around 110 soldiers, compared to over 120 of its civilians, a nearly even combatant/civilian casualty ratio. Last Friday Israel showered west Beirut with leaflets naming 90 Hizbullah fighters it claims to have killed. Earlier in the same week Hizbullah named its dead in a list running to 53 martyrs. Several more were acknowledged to have died over the weekend. Against a UN figure of 1,020 Lebanese killed up that translates into a combatant/civilian deaths ratio of anywhere between 1:11 and 1:19.
Taking a median figure it means that Israel has killed nearly 15 times more civilians to every combatant than Hizbullah. Even if the figures are inaccurate owing to Hizbullah under-reporting of its own casualties, together with the evidence of civilian casualties and damage gathered by human rights activists, they point to a level of force far beyond any reasonable definition of proportionate.
This has been confirmed by the Arab media and reporters like Jonathan Cook who have resisted the hegemonic western narrative which sees Hizbullah as the indiscriminating protagonist, randomly raining down rockets on Israeli cities, while Israeli troops invariably execute precision strikes on rigorously selected military targets. ...

Excite News - Hezbollah Shoots Down Israeli Helicopter: "Aug 12, 11:59 PM (ET) | By GAVIN RABINOWITZ
JERUSALEM (AP) - Nineteen Israeli soldiers were killed Saturday during an expanded offensive in Lebanon, the army said, making it the highest one-day toll for the Jewish state since the war against Hezbollah erupted.
The deaths, which occurred in several battles throughout the day, brought to more than 100 the number of Israeli troops killed so far.
In its statement Sunday, the military also said that a five member crew of a downed helicopter was missing and feared dead.
The soldiers were killed in battles as helicopters landed commandos near the Litani River and columns of armor and infantry pushed north to meet them.
Several soldiers died they were hit by anti-tank missiles and others in fierce gunbattles with the guerillas. Two were killed when a tank accidentally ran over them, the army said, adding that more than 50 Hezbollah fighters were killed. Israel Radio reported that some 100 soldiers were injured in the clashes.

ERUSALEM (AP) - Hezbollah fired more than 250 rockets into Israel on Sunday, the fiercest attack against northern Israel since the fighting began more than a month ago, the Israeli army reported. One Israeli man was killed.
After a stormy debate Sunday, Israel's Cabinet approved a Mideast cease-fire, agreeing to silence the army's guns in less than 24 hours. The Israeli military and Hezbollah both embarked on a last-minute barrage, trying to inflict as much damage as possible before the cease-fire began.
Israeli warplanes ranged across south Lebanon, rocketing south Beirut and other areas with 23 missiles that killed at least 15 people.
The 24-0 Israeli Cabinet vote, with one abstention, came a day after the Lebanese government approved the agreement and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah gave his grudging consent. The truce was to take effect Monday morning.

They said the convoy that had left the Israeli-occupied town of Marjayoun earlier in the day was targeted by at least one drone near the wine-making village of Kefraya in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Palestinian deaths rise amid fear of worse to come: "Nidal al-Mughrabi/Reuters | Friday August 11, 2006 | The Guardian
Last month was the deadliest in the Gaza Strip for nearly two years, a Palestinian research group said yesterday, as Israel's six-week offensive against militants in the territory led to a surge in killings.
The Palestinian Monitoring Group said 151 people were killed in the strip in July, [US equivalent -- 30,000 in one month] the highest total since October 2004, when 166 people died. The majority of those killed were civilians.
'The spiralling civilian casualties caused by Israeli actions throughout the region serve to strengthen extremists, weaken peace advocates and exacerbate the conflict,' said the chief Palestinian negotiator, Saeb Erekat, commenting on the findings."
From late June, when Israel launched its offensive, until August 8, at least 170 Palestinians were killed, of whom 138 were civilians and a quarter children, the monitoring group said. Other reports have put the death toll at 200.
When the offensive was launched, Israeli warplanes bombed and partly destroyed Gaza's only power plant and also hit several bridges. The flow of fuel, food and other essential supplies was also repeatedly interrupted. The United Nations says the densely populated territory is now facing some of the worst humanitarian conditions in years.
In a report this week the UN said more than 70% of the 1.4 million population was reliant on emergency assistance to meet food needs and the price of essential goods, such as flour and sugar, had risen by between 15% and 33% this year. Waste treatment in the northern strip has reached a "critical point", threatening to flood populated areas with sewage and spread infection. ... [Sophisticated ethnic cleansing???]

Lebanese PM rejects U.N. cease-fire plan - Yahoo! News: "By ZEINA KARAM, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 52 minutes ago
BEIRUT, Lebanon - The Lebanese prime minister rejected a U.N. cease-fire plan backed by President Bush, demanding on Monday that Israel immediately pull out from southern Lebanon even before a peacekeeping force arrives to act as a buffer between Hezbollah and the Jewish state.
Prime Minister Fuad Saniora's stand, delivered in a tearful speech to Arab foreign ministers, came on a day in which 49 Lebanese were killed — one of the deadliest days for Lebanese in nearly four weeks of fighting.
His Cabinet, which includes two Hezbollah ministers, voted unanimously to send 15,000 troops to stand between Israel and Hezbollah should a cease-fire take hold and Israeli forces withdraw south of the border. The move was an attempt to show that Lebanon has the will and ability to assert control over its south, which is run by Hezbollah, the powerful Shiite Muslim militia backed by Syria and Iran.
